Hi
I’m Ruth Barringham, freelance writer and author.
Have you ever thought of writing a book but had no idea of how to go about getting it published, or thought the whole self-publishing process to be too much of an expensive minefield to even contemplate?
Or have you tried to go the traditional route of getting your book published through a publishing company only to be rejected over and over again?
Or perhaps publishing your own book has been a dream for most of your life, but your dream has stayed just that, a dream, because you had no idea how to become a published author.
Most people, at some time in their life, have thought about writing a book.
Many people go a step further than that and actually write a book, but sadly, many of these books never get published.
But not because the books aren't good enough.
No. Most authors' books never get published because traditional publishing companies don't like taking a chance with an unknown author and would rather publish books that are guaranteed to produce huge sales, such as celebrity biographies.
And some authors believe that self-publishing their book will put people off buying it.
But let's face it, when was the last time you went into a book store and checked to see if a book was self-published before you bought it?
Before I became a writer I was oblivious to the fact that books could be self-published, and even now I don't look to see if a book is self-published before I buy it.
I have many books at home and some are by my favourite authors.
But none are by my favourite publisher.
I mean, what would be the point of seeing a book I want to buy and thinking "Oh no, I really want this book but it's published by Penguin and I only like books published by Random House, so I can't buy it."
Please note: The above is only an example of stupidity and I have absolutely nothing against the publishing company, Penguin, or any preference for books published by Random House. But you get my point, don't you?
We all know that if a book is good, it will sell.
But it needs to be published and available for sale, not only to the general public, but to books stores, online stores, book clubs, libraries, and schools. In fact to anywhere it can be sold any place in the world.
And with all the big publishing companies scared to take a chance on an unknown author it's no wonder that more and more authors are turning to self-publishing
There are several different ways to self-publish a book and several different types of people who want to self-publish their book.
Firstly there are those who want to do very little to self-publish because they just want to keep on writing and not get involved in the self-publishing process any more than they have to.
Then there are the control freaks who want to have complete control of self-publishing their book and do everything themselves.
Then there is the in-between group who, although they like to be in control, are happy to out-source most of the work to automate the whole process so they can get on with more important things, like writing their next book.
And who can blame them?
One of the most rewarding ways to earn a living as a writer is to become an author. This gives you a residual income because your books are earning you money while you continue to write.
Just think, if you wrote a book and sold several hundred copies every year that would be great.
But just imagine if you wrote 6 books in a year (and it is possible to write a book in only 28 days so 6 in a year is quite possible), you’d be selling thousands of books every year and as your work became more widely known your sales would grow.
But with so many books available on the subject of self-publishing, what is it that makes this one so much different?

Testimonial
"I just had to write and say thanks because finally someone has got down to the nut & bolts of how to physically publish my novel and get it into the book stores. I'm so excited. You're a genius. Thanks again."

Most self-publishing books will tell you all you need to know about marketing, book signings, book reviews and more.
But what most would-be self-publishers want to know is this:
- How do I get a book cover?
- How many copies should I have printed?
- What is and how do I get an ISBN
- What other information should the book contain?
- How do I write a press release?
- How can I understand printers' jargon?
- Do I need a book designer?
- How do I sell my book overseas?
- How do I get my printed copies into the book stores?
- How do I get my printed copies into the book stores in other countries?
- How do I do all this without going broke?
- How do I sell my book on Amazon.com if I don't live in the US?
These were the same questions I faced when I self-published my first novel.
You see, I live in Australia and it's very expensive to mail anything to another country from here.
So how could I have my book printed and shipped overseas without it costing a fortune? I knew that there was no way that I could afford to have 2,000 copies of my book printed and shipped abroad...
And To Where?
Where was I supposed to send the books to? And how could I keep track of them and send invoices to the right stores at the right time?
I just wasn't sure what I was supposed to do with dozens of copies of my book sitting in my garage at home.
And just getting my manuscript to the stage of "printer-ready" had been difficult.
I didn't even have a clue how to go about having a cover designed and dealing with the printing company wasn't easy either when I didn't understand the jargon. I had no idea that paper came in different "weights" or that book covers needed "bleed".
I had so much to learn and I was doing everything backwards.
Surfing the internet for the information I needed wasn't easy either because I wasn't even sure what I was looking for.
And even when I did find a web site that looked like it might be appropriate, I was blown away with technical terms and jargon.
All I knew was that I had progressed my novel to the stage of final draft. I'd written and rewritten it several times, had 2 professional edits done and then completed the final draft.
But Now What?
I didn't want to go down the traditional publishing route of finding an agent, then finding a publisher and then hoping that, eventually, after a few years of waiting and handing complete control of my work to strangers, my book would finally be published.
And even then it's still up to the author to promote their book and market it and yet they only receive 8 to 10% royalties from book sales.
No, that didn't suit me at all and being the control freak that I am, I wanted to have some say in how my book cover would look, how much the book would retail for and where and when it would be published.
But I really didn't know what to do.
I just wanted to know how to self-publish my book, and more importantly, how to sell it worldwide. But who would I sell it to?
I'd originally looked at self-publishing companies which are often called Vanity Publishers.
I looked at quite a few but I thought, well sure they can get my book published - for a fee - but because I didn't know what a good publishing deal was, I had no idea if these companies were any good or if I'd be getting value for money. Or more importantly - whether I could sell thousands of copies of my book this way.
I also read a lot of self-publishing books and although they covered preparing your manuscript and marketing your book once it's printed, they all left out the vital part completely. None of them explained exactly how to move my manuscript off my computer hard drive and onto the book store shelves.
I realised early on that if your book aint out there, no one is going to buy it. All the best printing and marketing in the world is going to be of no use if no one can buy your book.
There are 3 ways to self-publish a book:
-Vanity Publishing -POD Publishing -Self-Publishing
All these ways are covered in detail in this amazing eBook,
Self-Publish Worldwide.
Now what if I told you that it’s possible to self-publish your book and have it available for sale all over the world?
